Girls in Technology’s Spring 2012 Mentoring Program Summary

GIT LogoThis spring, Girls in Technology mentored a total of forty-one girls in Virginia and Maryland representing schools in the following counties: Fairfax , Arlington , Montgomery, Prince George’s and The District of Columbia.  Thirty-four mentors stepped forward from companies such as Booze Allen Hamilton, AT&T, Howard University, SAIC, CGI Federal, Symantac, and the US Patent Office.

Our participants followed up with essays that summarized their experience and qualifed them for participation in the GIT Scholarship Program.  We were particularly thrilled with some of the feedback we got this year.  The essays are excerpted below:

“The program has also taught me the best way to set goals for myself and has given me a sense of security- knowing that there are professionals and other girls that share the same interests with me.” Protege from VA

“I believe inspiration is a chain reaction. If I inspire other girls and they decide to inspire girls of the next generation then women’s interest in STEM fields of study will spread worldwide. Protege from VA“GIT showed me that there are a vast multitude of jobs in the STEM field that hadn’t even occurred to me before, that I had not even been aware of.” Protege from MD

“Science, technology, engineering and math, it is more than a college major; it is a future career choice and lifestyle. It is a life dedicated to forward thinking and pushing today into tomorrow.  As a female, I aspire to join the ranks of other women who have pioneered into this formerly male dominated field. The Girls In Technology program has encouraged me to accept the challenge and pursue a career within bio-medical engineering. “ Protege from MD

“At the orientation seminar, a video depicting a concept of touch screen technology in the future was shown.  I was in absolute awe; I could not grasp how the jump could be made from today’s technology to what the video had shown, and I was excited that I could be a part of creating the technology to do so.”  Protege from VA

“The bi-weekly lectures from the guest speakers truly encouraged me to focus even more on my next two years and the courses selections I take during 11th and 12th grade to prepare me for college.” Protege from MD

“GIT showed me that there are a vast multitude of jobs in the STEM field that hadn’t even occurred to me before, that I had not even been aware of.” Protege from MD
